The implementation timeframe for this goal setting initiative covered a four week period. The implementation took place in the school's Library/Makerspace during a 40 minute class session each week. Students in grades 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th were introduced to the goal setting protocol, and the use of Padlets to help support positive collaborative work efforts on a project. Student collaborative groups used the goal setting protocol in team padlets before and after their work constructing a team robot. The goal setting initiative was implemented to address documented challenges with student goal setting, work behavior, and collaborative team efforts. Data was collected throughout this progress to demonstrate student progress with this new procedure when working in collaborative groups on a Project Based Learning( PBL) activity. Assessment Descriptions:
A Pre and Post Student surveywill be used to track student’s opinions and experience with setting project goals. This survey will be taken individually by the students at the start of the project and also on the last day at the completion of the project. Each student will have their own Chromebook and the survey is embedded in the webquest students will be using throughout this project. Google forms is being used for the survey and will compile the student’s results into graphs for ease of use when analyzing the data.
Padlet Rubric- A rubric will be utilized after each of the 4 class sessions to assess the student’s use of the padlets in setting daily goals, as well as identifying the work steps needed to realize their daily goals. Each collaborative group has a padlet embedded in the webquest for this project. Groups will use the padlets at the beginning and end of each class, utilizing the 3 step goal process. The rubrics will assess student’s ability to set goals, identify work steps, and reflect and change actions as necessary. The information from the four rubrics will be compiled into graphs or diagrams illustrating the growth of students with setting goals and identifying work steps. This is directly related to two of the objectives of this initiative.
On Task Behavior checklist will be utilized by the teacher two times during each of the four classes resulting in 8 observations for each collaborative group. The checklist is based on a Google form, and the results will be illustrated in a graph or diagram tracking students work behavior while engaged in a collaborative project.
In the Padlets, a question section is available for students to pose questions or comments to the teachers, which will help teachers gage students understanding of the process. This will help guide discussions during the next class session.
Throughout the four class sessions, the teacher will keep informal observational notes about group’s progress and general understanding of the goal setting process.
The three assessments coupled with teacher observations, will illustrate students ability to set goals, identify steps to reach the goal, and their work behavior while engaged in their collaborative group.
